Commissions
When working on a commission, I collaborate closely with the client to make the finished product something they will treasure forever. I also hope the journey toward the finished piece is exciting and fulfilling for both of us.
I usually work directly on birch panel using charcoal and acrylic paint. When it is finished I coat the painting with an isolation coat and polymer varnish. This helps to protect the painting from UV rays, moisture and damage. If, in the future, the owner were to have the painting restored, a professional restorer could remove the polymer varnish, clean the painting and re-varnish it. To commission a painting based on a family memento or photograph can be a big contribution to a family's heritage or an individual's personal story and legacy.
The commission process:
1. Select a few photographs that inspire you.
2. Decide what size and the budget you would like. Consider where it will be hanging when considering the size. If you decide to use one of the frames I generally use, keep in mind it will add three inches total to the height and width. (The frames are 1 1/2“ wide)
3. Meet with me in person. If that is not possible, mail or email me a copy of the photographs. Together we will discuss which photograph would make the best painting in the price range and size you are looking for.
4. I will draw a sketch and email or mail an image of it to you. If you like the direction I am going, then I will send you a contract to sign and send back to me, along with 30% of the final price.
5. I document my painting with snapshots as I go along. I will occasionally send you an e-mail attachment or a copy of it in the mail, so you can see how it is progressing.
6. When it is done, I will send you another image of it. If you require major changes at this point, there maybe an additional cost.
7.Once you approve the final image, I will varnish the painting. It will need another week for the varnish to dry before it can be handled. If the painting needs to be framed or shipped, I will supply a quote based on the frame selected and shipping costs. When that is approved, you will make the final payment, including any costs associated with framing and shipping.
8. You hang it up and love it, or give it to someone as a gift and they love it.
